Project F.R.E.E. Philosophy

Claude Black saw himself as a protector of San Antonio’s African American community. Project F.RE.E., sponsored by Mt. Zion Baptist Church, was one of the Black family’s most wide-reaching and effective tools for community outreach. The program sponsored a variety of initiatives throughout the community targeted at increasing quality of life and alleviating conditions of poverty. The philosophical aim of the organization was to provide community members with the tools necessary to support themselves. Project F.R.E.E. included youth programming, job training, housing improvements, nutrition, and senior citizen outreach. One of Project F.R.E.E.’s biggest achievements was establishing San Antonio’s Meal’s on Wheels program to provide nutrition to seniors.
